"Big Bertha" is the name of a marine arachnid-type hyperspecies abnormal scientifically called Gephallis bertallosso . She is one of the most powerful beings on the planet, and a member of the avatar council seen in the avatar chamber.

Biography[]

Also known as "Kali", as she represents the Hindu goddess associated with eternal energy, this abnormal is capable of altering the magnetic resonance of her body to manipulate tectonic plates and cause underwater earthquakes,[1] as well as having the ability to create new volcanic islands.[2]

Season 2[]

Episode 2x07 - "Veritas"
This makes Big Bertha the most dangerous abnormal on the planet, and despite the Sanctuary Network's willingness to capture even dangerous abnormals, in Big Bertha's case, they had protocols in place to kill her. It was thought Helen Magnus euthanized her. However, triad member Emma Correia discovered the possibility she was still alive, and apparently found her; the search turned up fruitless, as only her tracking device was found, and that she believed Bertha died too.
Episode 2x12 - "Kali, Part I"
2x12

The Kali avatar and Will Zimmerman.

However, months later, Big Bertha was revealed to still be alive. Helen Magnus admitted to having kept her alive, merely sedating her, as she thought that keeping Bertha alive may have saved the earth as well. To prevent any fallout on her leadership, Magnus lied about killing her.
Episode 2x13 - "Kali, Part II"
News of this did not go well with the rest of the Sanctuary Network, particularly Terrance Wexford, who would be given command over Helen Magnus if she did not kill Big Bertha herself. Ultimately, Magnus attempted to stun her, which failed. Will Zimmerman, a former host of the makri connected to her, first attempting to stop her by reaching out to her with a dance. As Kali he initially convinces her to stop, however unfortunately Wexford simultaneously overrode Magnus's command and attempted to kill Bertha with depth charges. Wexford's attack only succeeded in angering Big Bertha, causing her to change her mind and launched a massive tsunami in response, which would devastate much of the coastline to the Indian Ocean.

Season 3[]

Episode 3x01 - "Kali, Part III"
Will Zimmerman later tries again by being brought to the point of death where it is said Kali will appear a final time to her former hosts and there he manages to convince her to show mercy and bring an end to her tsunamis. Using her connection to other lifeforms, Big Bertha uses red algae to stop one of the tsunamis, but is attacked by Terrance Wexford again before she can deal with the other one, injuring her badly and knocking her out. Will apparently manages to convince the other beings who appeared to him with her to intervene and save her and they resurrect Will and use land-based earthquakes to create another tsunami to cancel out her last one. They apparently also heal Bertha, who is described as being alive but inactive.
Episode 3x02 - "Firewall"
Helen Magnus states to Declan MacRae that Big Bertha's alive and in containment. She later tells the other heads of the Sanctuary Network that the security protocols they've put in place for Bertha are now running at optimal levels. The Sanctuary is now coating Bertha with a magnetic resonance pattern that is keeping her calm. "She's happy," concludes Magnus and with no other aberrant abnormal behavior, she is confident that Bertha's secure. When Terrance Wexford continues to attack her, Magnus defends her decision to keep Bertha alive as opposed to Wexford who had tried to kill her.

Later, Will Zimmerman uses the spiderbot to recall what happened when he communicated with Kali. After Kali's collapse from Wexford's attack, Kanaan and the other hyperspecies abnormal warn Will that an attack on Kali is an attack on them all and retribution would be sought if her life were to end. Recognizing Will's actions are only aimed at preserving Kali, the two agree to save Kali and stop the destruction. One of the robed figures present is revealed to be Gregory Magnus who gives Will a message for Helen.
Episode 3x11 - "Pax Romana"
It's revealed that Kali makes up the avatar council with Kanaan and another hyperspecies abnormal, but Praxis is having trouble communicating with Kanaan who is also failing to respond to Kali. After learning that Fallon is the one to usually communicate with Kali, Will Zimmerman agrees to compare his neural resonance pattern with hers.
