Merfolk are a race of aquatic abnormals native to the Bermuda Triangle that seem to be in part human, but have evolved to life underwater. The females are referred to as mermaids.
History[]
Episode 1x00 - "Sanctuary for All": A mermaid is shown to live in Helen Magnus's Old City Sanctuary. Magnus communicates with her through some form of telepathy by semi-physical touch (mirroring their palms against the glass of the enclosure).
Episode 1x09 - "Requiem": Merfolk can psychically communicate with each other over great distances. After Sally received a distress call, which she described as a series of flashes of anger and fear, on the psychic channel from her people in the Bermuda Triangle, Helen Magnus and Will Zimmerman set out on a submarine expedition to investigate where they encountered what appeared to be a massacre among the merfolk. Over 100 were counted to have died, a catastrophic loss to the merfolk population considering how rare they are as a species. During an autopsy, based on evidence, Will postulates that the merfolk went to war with themselves, however Magnus debates the idea considering that the merfolk society is incredibly benevolent as they rely greatly on each other for survival. They later discover that an undersea parasite had infested their brains, causing the creatures to tear each other apart.

There are hints given in the opening credits of season 1 and season 2 that merfolk were present at the sinking of the Titanic.
