This unnamed German Major was the leader of a group of Nazi soldiers stationed at a checkpoint in Normandy, France.

Biography[]

Episode 3x17 - "Normandy"
On June 5th, 1944, the German Major at the checkpoint stopped a German tank that was secretly holding James Watson, Helen Magnus, and Nigel Griffin. Watson was seen first, posing as a German gunner. However, the Major was smart and became suspicious; Watson eventually switched to speaking in English, making the Major realize he was being tricked. He and his men were then easily overpowered by Griffin's invisibility and the single firing of a tank shell into the guard shack.

Notes[]

  • Dialect: Part of how the German Major figured out James Watson's ruse is due to the error Watson made in claiming that his own dialect was from Garmisch-Partenkirchen - South Bavaria. The Major knew that this was false as he himself is from Grainau, Bavaria.
  • Status: The status of this character is officially unknown. In the episode, he's seen to move back and away from the tank to stand on the left side of the screen. After Nigel uses his invisibility to disarm and hit a German soldier with his own rifle, when the camera returns back to the previous wide shot of all of the German soldiers, the Major has completely disappeared from view, only a small shadow on the ground on the left edge of the screen can briefly be seen moving away before completely disappearing. Nigel was never shown to have fired the rifle he acquired at any of the Germans and the Major was not shown to have been affected by the tank blast. It can potentially be assumed that the Major simply ran away from the encounter.
    • Following the tank blast and resulting silence, the show treats the situation as if all of the Nazi soldiers at the check point had perished during the encounter. Historically, had the Major survived, likely fellow officers would have marked him as a deserter and considering the massive fallout and hunting of Nazi leaders following the Nuremberg trials, the Major is presumed to have either died during the encounter in the episode or very shortly after within the next couple of years or so.
