EXT – ROME, MORNING

[Church bell ringing]

INT – CONFERENCE ROOM

[Helen stands in front of a projection screen showing medical data from an abnormal patient.]

HELEN:
This case study shows an enlarged hypothalamus, nearly twice the size of a normal human. Such increased scale is often the first indicator of abnormal abilities, which is why detailed brain mapping is often our best recourse when diagnosing new patients. And now, in this situation, the patient was able to lower her body temperature to well below life-sustaining levels for days at a time.

[Helen pauses as Nikola Tesla enters at the back of the room.]

HELEN:
Such examples of this simple genetic mutation are part of a larger-scale trend we are seeing worldwide. More appearances of extraordinary genetic abilities are cropping up at an ever-increasing rate.

[Nikola Tesla hands a note to an assistant and whispers something. The assistant carries the note to the front of the room.]

ASSISTANT:
[whispering] Scusi. (Excuse [me].)

[Assistant whispers inaudibly in Helen’s ear and hands her the note.]

HELEN:
Grazie. (Thank you.)

[Helen opens it and reads, “You will be killed in less than three minutes. Meet me now. Tesla. PS. You look hot.” Helen looks up with alarm.]

HELEN:
Mi scusi. An urgent matter has come up. Can we take a short recess? Fera uno breve pause.

[Helen exits.]

INT – HALLWAY

[Tesla waits as Helen walks up to him.]

TESLA:
Helen Magnus. Kiss me and I’ll save your life.

HELEN:
And if I don’t?

TESLA:
[scoffs] It’s been over sixty years, just plant one on me already.

[Tesla turns his face to the side. As Helen moves in to kiss his cheek, Tesla turns back and catches the kiss on his lips. Helen shoves back with irritation.]

HELEN:
Nikola Tesla. You always did know how to get attention.

TESLA:
And you’re still boring as ever when it comes to giving a lecture. But to business: Cabal agents are all over the building. If we don’t leave now, things are going to get… rather bullet-ridden.

[Tesla takes Helen’s elbow and begins walking away from the conference room. Helen stops and turns to face him.]

HELEN:
And why should I believe you?

[In background, Cabal agents with rifles enter the conference room. Helen sees them and resumes walking quickly with Tesla.]

HELEN:
I assume you have a plan other than kissing me?

TESLA:
Genius, remember?

HELEN:
Ah.

INT – STAIRWAY TO CATACOMBS

[Helen and Tesla come down the stairs and stop at a door. Tesla brandishes a key before unlocking it and pushing it open and gesturing for Helen to precede him.]

TESLA:
Beauty before brains.

INT – CATACOMBS

[The catacombs stretch off into darkness until the lights come on as Tesla throws an old-fashioned sliding bolt across the door.]

HELEN:
Charming.

[They begin walking rapidly down the corridor.]

TESLA:
I know. Part of a 200-year-old system of catacombs underneath the city.

HELEN:
I’m assuming there are other exits further on?

TESLA:
Should be. My contact said there would be.

HELEN:
Contact?

TESLA:
Umhmm. Concierge at my hotel. [grins] Don’t you love Rome?

[Helen glances back the way they came at the banging sound of Cabal agents trying to force the door. The lock falls off as agents come in with guns raised.]

HEAD AGENT:
Get me thermal imaging of these tunnels, ASAP. Make sure every possible exit is covered. They either surrender or they die.

OPENING CREDITS

Act OneEdit

EXT – ROOF OF SANCTUARY

[Pans down to window, pushes in through window into…]

INT – HELEN’S OFFICE

[Bigfoot is rearranging pillows and dusting when Will enters.]

WILL:
Hey, big man. Didn’t we have a staff meeting scheduled for this morning?

BIGFOOT:
Ah, it was cancelled.

WILL:
Well, when?

BIGFOOT:
Last night.

WILL:
Because…?

BIGFOOT:
Ashley.

WILL:
[sighs] Okay, look. Just because Magnus is away does not mean we stop going about business as usual. I mean, she put me in charge and I want to take that very seriously.

[Bigfoot walks past Will without looking at him and continues cleaning.]

WILL:
So, we’ve got patients to discuss, possible cases that need investigating, and, you know, other stuff that needs attention.

[Bigfoot stops to lean on the back of Magnus’s chair and face Will]

BIGFOOT:
Meetings are boring.

WILL:
[laughs] Yeah. Yeah, they really are, aren’t they?

[Bigfoot turns back to polishing the desk and whistles]

WILL:
Okay, I’m cool with that. No meeting. So, uh, what do you guys do when you got the place to yourself? You know, poker night, maybe a little blackjack, you blast some tunes in the main library or something?

[Bigfoot again stops cleaning to face Will.]

BIGFOOT:
Henry’s in the lab, Squid requested a meeting with Ashley, and I’m making things look nice.

[Pause as Will looks stupefied, mouth hanging slightly open as if he had been about to speak but couldn’t find anything to say.]

BIGFOOT:
Perhaps you have some work that needs attending to?

[Will starts to answer as the lights flicker briefly]

WILL:
What the hell was that?

BIGFOOT:
I don’t know. Shall I look into it?

WILL:
If you don’t mind, because I actually do have some work I need to do.

[Bigfoot laughs, continues cleaning, Will gives a half-hearted laugh]

WILL:
I’m not really in charge here, am I?

[Bigfoot looks at him, grunts, and resumes cleaning with a chuckle]

WILL:
Right.

[Will turns to exit]

EXT – WAREHOUSE DISTRICT, DAY

[Ashley rides up to shady-looking building that appears to be an abandoned warehouse in a less-than-pristine neighborhood. A figure huddles at the top of a short flight of stairs, drinking from a bottle in a paper bag. The figure barely looks up as Ashley gets off her bike and heads toward the stairs.]

ASHLEY:
Squid! Got you some treats. Gotta say, I was surprised to get your message. I thought you said you didn’t have any info for me. [pause at the figure’s non-response] Squid!

[The figure turns and shoots Ashley with a dart of some kind. Ashley grunts and falls, apparently drugged. The figure stands up and removes sunglasses and hood to reveal John Druitt.]

ASHLEY:
You gotta be kidding me.

[Ashley passes out. Druitt kneels next to her to place his hand on the back of her neck before teleporting them both away.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Helen and Tesla run around a corner and stop, pressed up against the wall. Cabal agents can be seen searching the catacombs in the background]

HEAD AGENT:
Through here.

[Helen begins reaching for her gun while Tesla faces her]

TESLA:
Well, they’re really pissed at you. What did you do?

HELEN:
I stole three witches from a crypt in Scotland.

TESLA:
[shaking head] Stealing. You. I’m appalled.

HELEN:
[checking gun] Shut up and help me.

TESLA:
My god, you look sexy with a gun.

[Cabal agents approach the corner and Helen pistol-whips one in the face. The second agent grabs her wrist and Tesla shoves him up a wall by the throat.]

TESLA:
[deep voice] Leave her alone.

[Helen sees that Tesla’s eyes have gone black and his teeth are pointed as he raises a now-clawed hand to threaten the agent and growls. She turns to point her gun at Tesla instead of the agent.]

HELEN:
Nikola, that’s enough!

[Tesla visibly relaxes, his eyes change back, and he throws the agent to the ground. Helen briefly tracks the agent’s fall before again aiming her gun at Tesla. Tesla chuckles and grins as he walks toward the wall nearer to Helen.]

TESLA:
Well, that was exciting, huh?

HELEN:
A little too much so. You haven’t stopped taking your medication, have you?

TESLA:
No, no, no. I just, I just got a little excited. [briefly glances down at gun that Helen is still pointing at him] Come on, Helen, I don’t feed on humans. I made that vow long ago and I intend to keep it.

[Helen still looks frightened and suspicious, but lowers her gun. Tesla turns to lead the way down another corridor. Tesla stops under an empty light socket and sticks his finger in it. There is sparking before all the lights in the corridor turn on.]

HELEN:
Your favorite parlor trick.

TESLA:
[clears throat, gestures for Helen to precede him] This way, milady.

HELEN:
You haven’t lost your touch, I’ll give you that.

[Both continue down the now-lighted corridor. Sparks from light socket cut to:]

INT – SANCTUARY HALLWAY

[Camera pans from a hole in the wall full of sparking electrical wires to show Will and Bigfoot looking at the hole.]

WILL:
Any idea what could have done this?

BIGFOOT:
Many ideas. None that make sense.

WILL:
Yeah, I guess none of the abnormals Magnus allows to roam free would do this.

BIGFOOT:
Not if they wish to remain free.

[Henry walks up behind them from farther down the hall]

HENRY:
Crap in a bag. What the hell did that?

WILL:
Just asking the same question. Scratch marks on the floor and walls, plus damage on the inside to the electrical wiring. Whatever did this took live voltage.

HENRY:
Maybe it’s lying in a corner somewhere, licking its wounds.

WILL:
Problem is there’s lots of corners in this place. All our residents accounted for?

HENRY:
Yes, security systems would have gone off if something got free from the SHU.

WILL:
Still, let’s round up all the abnormals that are free and interview them.

HENRY:
I’ll check security logs, see if anything went goofy with the system.

WILL:
Okay. Plus, if you have surveillance camera footage for this floor, that’d be great.

HENRY:
On it.

[Henry exits, coughing]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Everything is the green of night-vision goggles until we see cabal agents searching the corridors. Tesla appears in a blur of movement from a side-tunnel and sends a cabal agent flying backwards into a second agent. Helen comes out from the same tunnel and moves to check the downed men while Tesla pulls a handkerchief from his pocket and wipes his hand.]

HELEN:
Come on. There will be more where they came from.

TESLA:
[grinning and moving off down the corridor] This is fun, isn’t it? Just like old times, back in London? When was that, forty-two? Forty-three?

HELEN:
I prefer not to think about it.

TESLA:
Come on, Helen. Every major spy agency in the world was looking for me. I needed your help. And besides, what’s a faked death among friends?

HELEN:
Whose hare-brained notion was it to supply every allied government with plans for your death ray weapon?

[Both press against a wall as Cabal agents yell indistinctly off screen]

TESLA:
Well, I thought they’d all share and that peace would break out. I did. I had my Nobel speech all memorized.

[Cabal agents are around the corner, still searching.]

CABAL AGENT:
This sector’s clear. Let’s move on.

[Helen turns back to Tesla with a suspicious expression.]

HELEN:
How did you know the Cabal were after me?

TESLA:
I watch them and they watch me. We’ve had a few entanglements over the years, but you know, I’ve never done anything so stupid as to actually steal from them.

HELEN:
I’ve had my contacts keeping an ear to the ground for any Cabal movements since they attacked my sanctuary. I would have known beforehand if they were going to make a move on me here. In fact, they didn’t show up until after you arrived. They’re not after me, are they? They want you.

TESLA:
[grinning] You haven’t lost your touch, either.

INT – WAREHOUSE

[Ashley startles awake, handcuffed to a chair in a room full of picture frames and mirrors that appear to be in storage. She struggles briefly against the handcuffs before subsiding.]

ASHLEY:
Okay, you can come out and gloat now, if you want. I’m awake.

[In the mirror, a door opens and Druitt enters]

DRUITT:
There’ll be no gloating. I find that… extremely ill-mannered.

[Druitt crosses the room and drapes his coat over a rack.]

ASHLEY:
Well, what’s your next move, then? Are you going to teleport me to the top of the Eiffel Tower and leave me hanging by my underpants?

[Druitt chuckles]

ASHLEY:
Or are you gonna make it fast?

DRUITT:
[faces Ashley] Neither.

ASHLEY:
Then what the hell do you want from me?

DRUITT:
Honestly? I need your help.

[Ashley looks horrified]

FADE OUT

Act TwoEdit

FADE IN, SAME SCENE

ASHLEY:
You have a kinda violent way of asking for help, FYI.

DRUITT:
I wish you no harm. But it was urgent that we speak.

ASHLEY:
And I’m listening. Let the insanity fly.

DRUITT:
Of course, that’s what you’d think of me. That I am unstable, deranged.

ASHLEY:
That’s pretty much what I call everybody who feeds me to lizard creatures. But I can be a bit harsh sometimes.

DRUITT:
Ashley, what happened before was deeply regrettable. I apologize for my actions without reservation. I can only ask for your forgiveness. There are things you need to know, about your mother. She’s in grave danger.

ASHLEY:
Dude, she’s my mom. She’s always in grave danger.

DRUITT:
Please, Ashley, there’s little time. I need to know where she is.

ASHLEY:
Me handcuffed to a chair, you babbling about time and danger. No, I don’t see why I should help you.

DRUITT:
I would like nothing more than to free you-

[Druitt begins walking towards Ashley, who loudly scoots her chair away from him]

DRUITT:
But you would undoubtedly try to kill me.

ASHLEY:
[wide-eyed smile] Me?

DRUITT:
Did your mother not give you some sort of explanation as to who I was?

ASHLEY:
She told me you were someone from her days back in London before she set up shop here.

[Druitt looks appalled and stunned.]

ASHLEY:
Oh! Oh, and that she was pretty sure you’d never return because she’d killed you. Trust me, I’ll be speaking to her about that. Talk about a blown call.

DRUITT:
We don’t have time for this. My sole purpose in bringing you here was for your own benefit as well as hers.

[Druitt begins walking towards Ashley again and Ashley scoots away. Camera focuses on her hands as she palms a lock pick down to where she can begin working on the cuffs.]

DRUITT:
You’ll have to trust me.

INT – CATACOMBS

[Shot of Cabal agents searching the corridors pans across to show Tesla peering at them around a corner, Helen standing behind him. They begin walking down a corridor as soon as the agents are out of sight.]

HELEN:
You’ve always been reckless. But contacting me directly while the Cabal was following you-

TESLA:
Oh, I know. It was not one of my best ideas. But hey, I had no choice. I needed to see you.

HELEN:
Then use the proper channels. Contact one of my facilities and have them arrange a secure location.

TESLA:
Would you rather have me endanger one of your sanctuaries or just you?

HELEN:
How about neither? Nikola, you dropped out of sight before the end of World War II, never to be seen or heard from again.

TESLA:
Well, I did die a lonely, impoverished, pitiful old man. Thanks for the funeral, by the way. I heard it was quite nice.

HELEN:
I faked your death to save your life, so that your work could continue. I think I’m owed an explanation as to your whereabouts since then.

TESLA:
Hey, perfecting the use of electricity and radio waves? Hard acts to follow, okay? But I have kept busy. At Oxford, all those years ago, what we did was more than just pushing boundaries. For me, it was personal.

HELEN:
As it was for all of us.

FLASHBACK – INT - OFFICE OR STUDY

[Flashback to image of Helen in the past, looking terrified and crying out in pain as Druitt holds her hand with a worried expression. A hand holds a needle with some dark fluid in it. Tesla is there.]

END OF FLASHBACK

TESLA:
[smiling] You all changed, whereas I found out who I really am. And the more I embrace that, the more I realize just how little I’ve accomplished.

HELEN:
Your gifts to the world will live on long after you die, whenever you actually die.

TESLA:
You think you can call this existence “living?” The Cabal hunt me at every turn.

HELEN:
But why? You’ve been underground for decades. We both know the Cabal only go after what they perceive to be of value.

TESLA:
Or a threat.

[Tesla walks away past Helen. She turns to look after him with suspicion and growing alarm.]

INT – ELSEWHERE IN CATACOMBS

[Camera focuses on Cabal agent taken out by Tesla during previous scene. Head Agent approaches, checks his pulse, sighs]

HEAD AGENT:
Pull our people back. Get these guys outta here. I want the ELRAD down here and set up in three minutes.

CABAL AGENT:
Yes, sir.

INT – SANCTUARY HALLWAY

[Will walks around the corner to find Bigfoot tending to an injured abnormal laying on the floor of the elevator. It’s Two-Faced Guy.]

WILL:
Another one? That’s the second attack in two hours.

TWO-FACED GUY, NICE FACE:
I never saw what it was. It came from the ceiling. [groans] Moved way too fast.

WILL:
What about, uh, him? Did he see anything?

TWO-FACED GUY, OTHER FACE:
No, I was, I was – [groan]

TWO-FACED GUY, NICE FACE:
He was meditating when it happened.

BIGFOOT:
If it’s in the elevator system-

WILL:
Yeah. It could get to anywhere in the Sanctuary. All right, let’s get him to the infirmary, and then meet up in Henry’s lab. Ready? One, two, three.

[Bigfoot and Will lift Two-Faced Guy off floor.]

INT – HENRY’S LAB

[Will and Henry are looking at something on a computer.]

HENRY:
Footage of the first two attacks came up empty, likely because whatever it is shorted out power to the surveillance systems before it struck.

WILL:
Yeah, but we should’ve caught something in the camera in the elevator.

[Bigfoot enters.]

HENRY:
Yeah, I’m having a look. [coughs]

WILL:
You okay?

HENRY:
Yeah, it’s just a flu going around. I’m fine.

[Will and Bigfoot lean in to peer at the computer monitor. Henry’s head droops as he falls asleep. The monitor shows Two-Faced Guy standing in the hallway, waiting for the elevator. The doors open and Two-Faced Guy is hidden from the shoulders up by the top of the elevator doors. Something off camera snatches him from above and pulls him up out of sight as he yells. The elevator doors close.]

WILL:
Wow. Whatever it is, it’s damn fast. Uh, can you slow it down and enhance the image?

[Will and Bigfoot see that Henry is asleep. Bigfoot smacks him on the chin]

BIGFOOT:
Hey.

HENRY:
[startles awake] Yes, but take the safety off first! [looks around] What? I’m fine.

[Bigfoot holds Henry’s head still and feels his forehead.]

BIGFOOT:
You have fever. You should rest.

HENRY:
Nah, I can hack it.

WILL:
Nah, no, maybe the big guy’s right. You should get some rest. But listen, before you go, um, can you bring up the footage of the corridors above and below where the attack took place?

BIGFOOT:
Let him rest. He will work later.

WILL:
Okay. Well, just show me how to access the footage and I’ll, uh-

[Bigfoot grabs Henry and lifts him onto his feet to march him out of the room]

BIGFOOT:
He is going to rest now.

[They exit]

WILL:
Uh, oh. Okay. Get better.

INT – CATACOMBS

[Tesla and Helen walking down even more corridors.]

HELEN:
Why would the Cabal see you as a threat?

TESLA:
I’m a vampire. Some people are threatened by that.

HELEN:
Only part, Nikola. Pure-blood vampires were wiped out centuries ago. Besides, you alone are not enough to make the Cabal this angry. What’s really going on?

TESLA:
The Ancient Ones, they were intelligent, gifted, powerful, until a bunch of church-folk decided that our race was impure, evil, and not only did they hunt them down, kill them off, but they turned our species into a cultural joke.

HELEN:
Ancient vampires were the Caesars, the pharaohs of civilization. Humans were enslaved, they rose up with good reason. If the world knew the truth-

TESLA:
Humans were conquered because we were smarter and stronger. And when vampires ruled the world, it was a golden age. Science, art, architecture all advanced. And after they killed them off, what happened?

HELEN:
The Dark Ages.

TESLA:
And now people think we’re allergic to garlic and that we can turn into bats at will. It’s beyond insulting. [Turns a corner] This way.

[both walk off screen]

INT – ELSEWHERE IN THE CATACOMBS

[Cabal agents carry a large metal box labeled, “ELRAD” down the corridor.]

CABAL AGENT:
[over radio] Sir, all teams have been pulled back.

HEAD AGENT:
Good.

[Agents set down the ELRAD box. Head Agent puts on ear protection and picks up a control box. Other agents turn to face away while putting on their own hearing protection.]

HEAD AGENT:
Let’s clean ‘em out.

[Head Agent pushes buttons on control box and a shockwave starts off down the corridor, shaking loose a large amount of dust from the ceiling.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Helen and Tesla turn a corner]

TESLA:
As though a vial of stale water blessed by some priest would have any other effect than a bad taste in my-.

[Tesla pauses mid-sentence, and Helen turns to look back the way they came as a rumbling noise starts.]

HELEN:
Earthquake.

TESLA:
Worse.

[Tesla shoves Helen into a side corridor just as the shockwave hits and throws him 15 feet backward into the wall. As the dust settles, Helen clicks on her flashlight and comes back out of the side corridor. Tesla hangs on the wall by a jutting piece of wood through his chest at about where his heart should be. His head hangs loosely as if he is dead or unconscious. Helen walks over to him.]

HELEN:
[worried] Nikola.

FADE OUT

Act ThreeEdit

FADE IN, SAME SCENE

[Nikola draws a sudden breath and Helen jumps slightly]

TESLA:
[Dracula impersonation] I vant to suck your blood.

HELEN:
[exasperated relief] Get down from there.

[Tesla groans as he shoves himself off of the stake impaling him, landing on his feet and looking down at the blood-stained hole in his shirt.]

TESLA:
Irony is, I once owned the patent to that weapon. I never should have sold it to Edison, cheapskate that he was. [picks out splinters]

HELEN:
Do you think this is funny? Tricking me into helping you with whatever game you’re playing with the Cabal? I don’t appreciate being put in the line of fire.

TESLA:
Helen…

HELEN:
You’ve always been like this, haven’t you? Selfish and arrogant, putting your own desires before everyone else’s.

TESLA:
I brought you here for two reasons: Because only you can help me finish what I’m working on and because I love you.

HELEN:
Yes, so you keep- [Pause as Helen’s shocked brain catches up with her ears] What?

TESLA:
I always have.

[Helen stares at Tesla with growing alarm and ill-concealed revulsion as Tesla reaches out to caress her cheek.]

TESLA:
More than that lunatic Druitt ever did.

[Tesla lets his hand fall after Helen shifts minutely away from him.]

TESLA:
I mislead you and I deeply apologize for that, but I had to see you.

HELEN:
[wide-eyed shock] You’re serious, aren’t you?

[Tesla gives a brief smile that fades as Helen continues to stare at him]

INT – WAREHOUSE

[Druitt is standing in front of Ashley, who still sits on the chair with her hands behind her back, apparently handcuffed. Druitt sets a bottle of water down.]

DRUITT:
We knew each other in London, your mother and I, when we were young. In fact, we were rather close.

ASHLEY:
[shaking head] See, now I know you’re full of crap.

DRUITT:
Because she’s a hundred and fifty-eight years old?

[Druitt picks up water bottle and slowly walks towards Ashley]

ASHLEY:
First off, she’s a hundred and fifty-seven… And I get that she’s special, it’s… some sort of accident of her genetic makeup. But the chances of two people having the same defect-

DRUITT:
Are much higher if it’s no accident. [offers bottle to Ashley] You sure?

[Ashley slaps Druitt’s hand away with her now uncuffed hands, kicking him in the stomach as she comes up out of the chair yelling. Druitt lands on his back as Ashley kicks his feet out from under him. As Druitt rolls over to get to his feet, Ashley gets an arm around his neck in a choke-hold. Druitt rolls over to pin her to the floor beneath him, her arm still around his neck from behind.]

DRUITT:
[Irritated] This is tedious.

[Druitt teleports them into the middle of a busy intersection.]

DRUITT:
[Shouting over the noise of traffic and Ashley’s exclamations of surprised alarm] Should we talk here?

ASHLEY:
What are you doing?

[Druitt teleports them to a rocky ledge above a river of lava]

DRUITT:
Or here?

ASHLEY:
Oh my God! [Screams]

[Druitt teleports them to a point in mid-air, tens of stories above a paved street. Ashley screams as they plummet towards the street below.]

ASHLEY:
Stop it! Stop it! [Screams]

[Druitt teleports them back to the floor of the warehouse, landing with a bump with Ashley still behind and beneath him. Ashley is gasping for air.]

DRUITT:
[irritated] As I said, there’s little time. I need to know where Helen is.

[Ashley lies on the floor coughing and gasping for breath]

INT – SANCTUARY BASEMENT CORRIDOR

[Bigfoot and Will shine a flashlight on another section of sparking wiring that has been ripped apart]

WILL:
It knew how to disable the motion detectors. Made us blind on purpose. It’s that intelligent?

BIGFOOT:
The most dangerous things are.

[Will shines flashlight at something on the floor, then bends to inspect it more closely]

WILL:
Hey, check this out.

[Will picks it up and hands it to Bigfoot]

BIGFOOT:
A scale.

WILL:
It looks almost reptilian. You think it’s still here?

BIGFOOT:
Unlikely.

[Will stands up and takes a few steps, looking back down at the floor as something rattles away from his foot. Will had kicked a pill bottle and it rattles as it rolls. Two other bottles and a bunch of loose pills lay nearby. A shipping pallet of cardboard boxes nearby have large holes in them. Will shines the flashlight at them and can see a swath of blood and claw marks on the boxes. Will pulls a pill bottle out of a box and looks at the label.]

WILL:
Diazepam. It’s a garden-variety sedative. It treats everything from insomnia to seizures. Looks like whatever did this wanted some badly. What kind of abnormal has the ferocity and power of a wild animal, combined with the cunning and intellect of a human? [suddenly realizes who he’s talking to] Other than, you know, you.

[Bigfoot walks off.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Helen and Tesla stand facing each other in the same spot. There is a runnel of blood dripping down the wall from the stake Tesla had been impaled on.]

TESLA:
Back at Oxford, the others used the Source for power and for greed, but you… You altered yourself out of a pure desire for knowledge.

FLASHBACK

[Helen cries out in pain as she is injected with the dark substance seen in the last flashback. Druitt’s worried face flashes past and we see Helen’s hand holding someone else’s.]

END OF FLASHBACK

TESLA:
You’re the only scientist, perhaps the only person I’ve ever really admired.

[Helen glances over her shoulder as she hears approaching footsteps, then grabs Tesla’s elbow and pulls him down the corridor]

HELEN:
Come on.

INT – WAREHOUSE

[Ashley is sitting on the same chair, handcuffs hanging from a single wrist. Druitt holds out a small locket, laying open so that Ashley can see the picture of Helen inside. Ashley takes it.]

DRUITT:
This picture was taken by Henry Talbot in Southampton, eighteen eighty-uh, something. I forget the exact date.

ASHLEY:
Where did you get this?

DRUITT:
As a gift, from your mother while we were both at Oxford, though she was just auditing courses in those days. No women were allowed to enroll. [small laugh] A rule she railed against with a vengeance, believe me.

ASHLEY:
[disbelieving] You were college buddies with my mom.

DRUITT:
Yes, at first. Things became more serious between us later.

ASHLEY:
Okay, dude, you have to stop referring to my mom as your ex or seriously, I will kill you.

DRUITT:
Hm.

[Druitt reaches out to retrieve the locket. Ashley returns it with some reluctance.]

DRUITT:
We were part of something, something we called The Five. A small group dedicated to expanding our knowledge of the physical world by the most unconventional means.

ASHLEY:
How can you be old like her?

DRUITT:
Unlike what you’ve been told, your mother was not born with a genetic abnormality. No, she chose to become something different. We all did. We were so curious to know what humans could become. Evolve into, given the chance.

ASHLEY:
Who were the others?

DRUITT:
Besides your mother and myself was Nigel Griffin, Sir James Watson, and Nikola Tesla.

ASHLEY:
As in… the-

DRUITT:
Yes, the same. Though I still say he leeched off Edison and cheated Marconi. But, I digress… Have you heard of the species sanguine vampiris?

ASHLEY:
Yeah, vampire. They’re extinct.

DRUITT:
Not quite. They were all but exterminated by the Church centuries ago. Those who lived through the purges were made sterile. Your mother was able to procure a very rare sample of ancient, untainted vampire blood, one that was collected before the sterilization of the species was carried out. Blood that supposedly possessed miraculous properties. No one had ever dared inject pure sanguine vampiris until your mother derived a serum from it.

FLASHBACK

[Helen sits in a chair with Druitt kneeling next to her. A man whose face is off screen walks towards her, holding a needle full of serum. Another man is standing behind Helen’s chair, visible only from the chest down.]

FIRST MAN (TESLA):
It’s ready.

SECOND MAN (GRIFFIN):
You don’t have to go first. John or I could have a go to start.

THIRD MAN (WATSON):
He’s right. No need for unnecessary heroics. The side-effects are completely unknown.

HELEN:
[Nervous, but trying to hide it] Thank you, gentlemen. But this experiment was of my design. I shall be the one to prove it’s worth.

[Druitt takes Helen’s hand to get her attention.]

DRUITT:
Helen, you’re certain?

HELEN:
We’ve risked too much to turn back now. We need to know.

[Druitt smiles slightly as Helen turns back towards the man with the needle.]

HELEN:
You may proceed, Nikola.

[Nikola slowly injects Helen with the serum. Helen winces as the needle breaks the skin and gasps in pain just after the entire serum has been injected, clutching at Druitt’s and Nikola’s hands. Both men look deeply concerned. Helen turns wide, frightened eyes to Druitt.]

END OF FLASHBACK

ASHLEY:
Wait a minute, she’s part vampire?

DRUITT:
No. She’s human, and so much more. After each of us was injected, we received unique… gifts as a result.

ASHLEY:
Yeah, seen yours in action, thanks.

DRUITT:
Griffin’s molecules became photosensitive, Watson’s mind grew to new heights, and Tesla’s reaction was the most dramatic. His genetic disposition brought forth vampiric traits which had lain dormant in his genes. But your mother? Well, her gift was the most simple and elegant.

EXT – SANCTUARY

WILL:
[voiceover] It’s as though whatever’s doing this can just disappear.

INT – HENRY’S BEDROOM

[Will is sitting in a chair, Henry is convalescing in the bed.]

HENRY:
Yeah, but there’s nothing like that living here.

WILL:
That we know of. Could be one of our residents manifesting a new power. I dunno.

[Bigfoot enters with a tray of food.]

HENRY:
I thought it was starve a fever…

BIGFOOT:
An old wives’ tale.

[Will notices as Henry moves to sit up that Henry has a bloody bandage on his leg and two bottles of Diazepam on his nightstand.]

BIGFOOT:
You need nourishment.

HENRY:
[whining] Ah, is that mushroom?

[Bigfoot smacks Henry in the back of the head.]

HENRY:
Ow.

BIGFOOT:
Eat!

WILL:
So were you down there recently?

HENRY:
Where?

WILL:
Storage.

HENRY:
I don’t remember. I get around a lot in the day.

WILL:
[Nods at Henry’s leg] When did that happen?

HENRY:
Oh, that? I did that yesterday, moving some equipment in the lab. Why?

WILL:
Oh, we found some fresh blood on one of the boxes in the storage.

HENRY:
Creature’s?

WILL:
I dunno. With you out of commission and Magnus away, I haven’t been able to run a detailed analysis.

HENRY:
Well, when she gets back, I’m sure she’ll get to the bottom of it.

WILL:
I’m just thinking, if the blood is yours, we can eliminate it as evidence.

HENRY:
Listen, dude, seriously. I don’t remember being down there.

BIGFOOT:
Will, he must rest.

WILL:
What was the piece of equipment in your lab that cut you?

HENRY:
[irritated] I don’t know, Will, something sharp.

WILL:
Did Magnus order a restock of Diazepam?

HENRY:
[confused] What?

[Bigfoot stands up and approaches Will]

BIGFOOT:
Will. Go.

[Will nods and stands up.]

WILL:
Sorry.

[Will exits.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Cabal agents sweep corridors. A lot.]

HEAD AGENT:
Bravo and Delta teams close in from alternate exit points.

CABAL AGENT:
[over radio] Yes, sir.

[Farther down, Helen and Tesla are in a side corridor. Helen stops abruptly as green laser lights from Cabal agents’ gun shine across her path. She and Tesla turn back, only to realize that Cabal agents are also coming in from the other direction. They flatten themselves on either side of the alcove they’re in.]

TESLA:
I, I feel so safe when I’m with you.

HELEN:
[urgent whisper] Quiet!

[Tesla grins, but remains silent.]

HELEN:
[whispering] We’re going to have to fight our way out of here. No killing.

TESLA:
[normal volume] Said the woman with the gun to the vampire.

HELEN:
[irritated whisper] Just follow my lead.

TESLA:
[Still normal volume] It won’t be necessary.

HELEN:
[angry] I, for one, don’t intend to get captured or killed.

TESLA:
You won’t.

HELEN:
What do you mean?

[Tesla smiles. Cabal agents start yelling. Helen looks down the corridor as several gunshots are fired. Tesla steps across to Helen. The gunfire and yelling start to drop off.]

TESLA:
The playing field just got leveled.

[Tesla turns and leaves the alcove.]

INT – ELSEWHERE IN CATACOMBS

[Head Agent and his team are moving toward the gunfire.]

HEAD AGENT:
[into radio] Bravo teams, check in. [silence] All teams, report!

[As Head Agent walks past a cross-corridor, the two agents with him are grabbed from the sides and disappear off screen. Head Agent turns back towards them. An extremely fast-moving shadow comes up behind Head Agent. As he turns back toward the sound the shadow moves in front of him, revealing itself to be a figure with very long fingernails, then grabs him by the face and snaps his neck. Head Agent falls.]

INT – HELEN’S OFFICE

[Will tries to access Henry’s medical files. The words “Access Denied” flash onto the screen after Will enters his password. Will sits back, looking pensive and shaking his head.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Helen and Tesla come down a corridor to find Head Agent lying dead on the ground. Helen’s flashlight reveals lines of blood across his neck. She kneels next to him.]

HELEN:
My god. What did this?

TESLA:
It’s not so much the “what” as the “why” that counts.

HELEN:
This is your project, isn’t it? [Helen stands and approaches Tesla.] This is what you’ve been working on.

TESLA:
[grinning] Tonight, you get to witness the rebirth of the greatest abnormal that ever walked the Earth.

[Helen turns as she hears two vampires approaching, taking a step back and pointing her gun at them. One growls.]

HELEN:
My god, Nikola, what have you done?

TESLA:
[turns to face Helen, still grinning] Welcome to the future.

INT – WAREHOUSE

[Druitt is kneeling in front of Ashley, removing the last handcuff from Ashley’s wrist.]

DRUITT:
I realize you need time to process all this. That isn’t a luxury that we have.

[Druitt finishes with the handcuffs and moves back to sit in a chair opposite Ashley.]

ASHLEY:
[flatly] I like your story. It’s a nice story.

DRUITT:
Tesla’s intent on making contact with your mother. Imminently. Now whatever you may think of me, of The Five, he’s easily the most dangerous.

ASHLEY:
[shaking head slightly] Good twist. Not enough.

DRUITT:
Ashley, I am not your enemy. Not any more.

ASHLEY:
Baldy, you invaded our house. You fed me to a giant iguana. If that’s not enough to make you my enemy, then what the hell is?

DRUITT:
[irritated] Oh, I was wrong to try to reason with you, you’re incapable of seeing the truth.

ASHLEY:
What truth?

DRUITT:
That you have no concept of the meaning of your work. You just shoot, maim, and capture whatever Mommy tells you, without a single regard for the consequences of your actions.

ASHLEY:
[angry] That is not true.

DRUITT:
You’re a killer, all right. You live for the thrill of the hunt, the exquisite rush of that moment of violence. You find it utterly intoxicating. I know the feeling very well myself-

[Ashley lunges out of the chair and grabs Druitt by the throat]

ASHLEY:
I am nothing like you!

DRUITT:
[calmly] Oh, you’d like nothing more than to kill me, resurrect your wounded pride… Get some blood on your hands. The only reason you haven’t really tried is because you aren’t sure if you can pull it off.

[Ashley is still holding him by the throat, her eyes watering.]

DRUITT:
We don’t have time. We have to go.

[Ashley lets go and takes half a step back, hands on hips.]

DRUITT:
I’m appealing to your judgment, to your intuition. I want you to think! Not just act. See, I brought you here to help you, Ashley, give you the chance to make a choice. To show you a world your mother has kept hidden from you. Don’t turn away from it. Trust me. Help me save your mother.

INT – CATACOMBS

[The two vampires are standing still, growling quietly.]

HELEN:
What the hell are they?

[Tesla crosses over to stand with them]

TESLA:
Well, in a very basic sense, they’re me.

HELEN:
You found a way to revive the species.

TESLA:
The question: [holds up a knife he cuts his own hand] Could I use my own altered DNA to turn a boring old homo sapien into a higher, more evolved species?

[Tesla kneels next to the body of Head Agent and dribbles some of his own blood into his mouth. One of the vampires hands Tesla a U-shaped metal bar with copper wiring wrapped around the middle.]

TESLA:
And the answer is so simple, it will make you cry. Watch.

[Tesla touches the two ends of the bar in his hand to Head Agent’s corpse. Electricity arcs from the points. Head Agent arches and yells. Helen looks alarmed and horrified. Tesla grins. Head Agent’s yelling changes tone as Tesla stops shocking him. Head Agent’s eyes are black and his teeth pointed. Tesla smiles in triumph at Helen. Head Agent gets to his feet faster than the eye can follow, growling at Helen and brandishing now-clawed hands.]

INT – WAREHOUSE

[Ashley is standing in front of a mirror. She turns away to face Druitt, who is still sitting in the same chair.]

ASHLEY:
What does Tesla want with my mom?

DRUITT:
Tesla’s intent on creating an army of deadly creatures. Topple the Cabal once and for all. Helen will undoubtedly refuse his offer to join him in his efforts, and when she does…He will kill her.

ASHLEY:
How do you know all this?

DRUITT:
Because. He came to me first. [Druitt begins to unbutton the top buttons on his shirt.] My last encounter with your mother did, indeed, leave me close to death. But Tesla found me, revived me. And when I refused him, well… Nothing quite like electroshock therapy to clear the mind.

[Druitt pulls his shirt aside to reveal several circular burns on his chest.]

ASHLEY:
My god.

DRUITT:
And the rage that once fueled me is gone. [clears throat of emotion] I’m whole once again. [Druitt looks up at Ashley as he stands and crosses to her.] Together, we can save her. But I need to know where she is. I am your only hope.

[Ashley remains silent, appearing to be biting back tears.]

DRUITT:
[Pleading] Please. I need to make things right. For you. For her.

INT – CATACOMBS

[Tesla is facing Head Agent]

TESLA:
Well, thanks for joining the party. Now, uh, go join the others.

[Helen is backing slowly away, eyes wide. Tesla turns to her.]

TESLA:
See, the coolest thing about me using my own DNA to reanimate the dead is… [laughs] They do whatever I say.

HELEN:
They’re practically mindless.

TESLA:
I know. They’re fast, vicious, strong, but they’re as dumb as tree stumps. Which defeats the whole purpose of the project.

HELEN:
You want me to help you make them intelligent.

TESLA:
This is the culmination of everything we stood for as The Five: Pushing boundaries, exploring realms of science that other people were afraid to. Just imagine!

[Tesla turns toward the three vampires.]

TESLA:
Sanguine Vampiris.

[The three vampires growl happily at Tesla.]

TESLA:
Reborn.

HELEN:
[shaking head slightly] They would only enslave us again.

TESLA:
Well, I don’t think human beings are doing such a good job of it right now, do you? Hmm? You and I could usher in a new golden age of thought and culture and peace…

HELEN:
[shaking head more] You’re mad, Nikola.

TESLA:
[yelling] No! [Normal tone] The Philadelphia Experiment was mad. But this… is progress.

INT – HENRY’S ROOM

[Henry is tucked into bed, Will sitting on a chair next to it.]

HENRY:
Dude, I am not a shape-shifter.

WILL:
What about the treatments you’ve been undergoing with Magnus, which are so secret I’m not even allowed to know about them?

HENRY:
That’s personal.

WILL:
And I respect that. But I need to know what’s been attacking people around here. I just wanna rule this out.

HENRY:
Then you’re just gonna have to take my word for it.

WILL:
Covering this up, Henry, is only going to make it worse. I can help you. But if someone else is attacked-

HENRY:
Get out, Will. I mean it. Go.

[Will stands up and walks out.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Tesla is standing in front of his vampires, facing Helen.]

TESLA:
We all know the abnormals are on the rise. And now, we just need somebody to lead them.

HELEN:
You.

TESLA:
[grins] Us. You saw how my Mini-Me’s handled those trackers earlier tonight. Now just imagine, an army of them, huh? But massively intelligent! You and I could give the Cabal-

[Helen raises her gun and shoots Tesla three times. He falls back to be caught by the vampires behind him as Helen turns and runs. Tesla stands up and looks down at his chest briefly before looking back the way Helen had run.]

TESLA:
[Calmly] Ouch.

[Tesla turns to the two older vampires.]

TESLA:
Get her.

[The vampires run off after Helen.]

INT – SANCTUARY HALLWAY

[Will walks down the hallway to the elevator and pushes the button. The doors open to reveal a six-foot-tall snake-like lizard creature with two arms, no legs, and several two-foot-long claws. Will jumps back against the far wall.]

FADE OUT

Act FourEdit

FADE IN, SAME SCENE

WILL:
[to creature] Easy! Easy!

[The creature lunges out of elevator at Will, who turns and runs down the hallway with the creature in pursuit.]

INT – CATACOMBS

[Helen is running down a corridor with the two vampires close behind. She turns and shoots them eight times. They stagger but keep coming. Helen turns to continue running.]

INT – SANCTUARY HALLWAY

[Will rounds a corner with the creature chasing him. Will jumps over something off camera and there is a clatter as the creature hits it. Will rounds another corner with no creature in sight behind him, running to a door that he finds is locked. He turns as the creature appears in the hallway and pauses in front of a window when it sees that Will is not running. A dark figure hits the creature from the hallway that Will had come out of, knocking the creature through the window and following it down. There is a thud and a grunt that sounds familiar. Will crosses to the window and peers at the ground several stories below to see the creature slinking off. Henry is laying on the ground transitioning from something fur-covered back to his human self.]

EXT – SANCTUARY YARD BELOW HALLWAY WINDOW

[Will kneels down next to Henry as Bigfoot joins them. Henry appears to be unconscious.]

WILL:
Henry. [looks at Bigfoot] Why didn’t you just tell me?

BIGFOOT:
He didn’t want anyone to know. And I promised him no one would. [Turns to Henry as he starts to wake up.] Henry. Just lie still.

INT – CATACOMBS

[Druitt and Ashley hurry through the corridors]

DRUITT:
Can we be certain they came down here?

[Ashley stoops to pick up something off the ground, standing and showing a bullet casing to Druitt]

ASHLEY:
Definitely one of mom’s.

DRUITT:
She always carries a gun?

[They both look down the corridor as they hear sounds of distant shots. Ashley pulls her gun and aims down the corridor.]

ASHLEY:
With good reason.

[Druitt follows as Ashley begins moving toward the gunfire.]

INT – ELSEWHERE IN THE CATACOMBS

[Helen is standing with her back to a small cross-corridor, facing the two slowly advancing vampires. She shoots them another two times before she runs out of ammunition. The two vampires rush in for the kill as Helen raises her hands to defend herself.]

TESLA:
Not yet.

[Both vampires stop immediately. Helen gasps for air, looking distinctly unrelieved. Tesla’s eyes are black and his teeth are pointed.]

TESLA:
Not yet. Back off.

[Helen lowers her hands, still breathing heavily.]

TESLA:
[shaking head slightly] Helen. [sighs] Nice shooting.

HELEN:
I thought you loved me.

TESLA:
[glances off to side as if in contemplation] Did I? Oh. I don’t think it’s gonna work out.

HELEN:
[bitter smile for a moment as she advances on Tesla] Well, then. Guess I can tell you that, at Oxford… No one liked you.

TESLA:
[condescending] Aw. Was it because I was a genius?

HELEN:
No. Because you were an obnoxious ass.

TESLA:
[laughs] Well. Guess who’s still standing?

[Helen jumps and Tesla grunts in pain as they hear the sound of Druitt teleporting in. The camera pans down to show Druitt’s bloody fist sticking out of Tesla’s stomach. Druitt leans around to look at Tesla with a grim smile on his face.]

HELEN:
John!

DRUITT:
Hello, Nikola.

[Druitt abruptly pulls his fist out of Tesla, who cries out in pain and falls. The other three now very angry vampires growl as Helen turns quickly to face them and backs away toward Ashley and Druitt. Druitt reaches around Helen and Ashley. All three of them disappear as he teleports them away.]

EXT – WALKWAY SOMEWHERE IN ROME

[Druitt teleports in with Helen and Ashley. Helen immediately shoves away and whirls to face him. Ashley faces Druitt from a step behind Helen.]

HELEN:
John! What the hell are you doing?

DRUITT:
Saving your life.

HELEN:
Why?

DRUITT:
You’ve had a long night, Helen. I’m simply glad to see you safe and sound.

HELEN:
The blood I gave you. It should have crippled you, or worse.

DRUITT:
It did.

HELEN:
Then how-?

[Druitt pauses and exchanges glances with Ashley. Helen follows Druitt’s gaze. Ashley nods at Druitt, blinking back tears.]

DRUITT:
[bowing slightly] Ashley can explain.

[Druitt teleports away. Helen looks at Ashley, who can’t quite meet her mother’s eyes.]

EXT – SANCTUARY

WILL:
[voiceover] Hey, how you feelin’?

HENRY:
[voiceover] Fine.

INT – HENRY’S BEDROOM

[Henry is in bed working on a laptop. Will crosses to chair and sits down.]

WILL:
I just wanted to let you know we, uh, we chased that snake-creature to the basement warehouse. Looks like it hatched inside of one of the artifacts that Magnus brought back from the Amazon a few months ago. Must have escaped and grown to full maturity inside the walls here and… Listen, I was a jerk. I just didn’t think what it must be like to carry this around with you. I’m sorry.

[Henry looks up at Will but remains silent. Will stands up from the chair. Henry looks back at this laptop.]

WILL:
And hey, uh… Thanks for saving my ass.

[Henry doesn’t look up. Will turns to leave. Henry looks up as Will reaches the door.]

HENRY:
You’re welcome.

[Will turns back. Henry resumes working on the laptop. Will leaves and closes the door behind him.]

EXT – WALKWAY IN ROME

[Ashley and Helen walk silently to the end of the walkway where they have a bird’s-eye view of the city. Helen sighs quietly, on the brink of tears, and looks at Ashley. Ashley looks back.]

ASHLEY:
He’s my father, isn’t he?

HELEN:
[quietly] Yes. He is.

[Ashley nods, takes a deep breath, and blinks back her own tears as she turns to look out over the city. Helen regards her silently for a moment before turning toward the view.]

HELEN:
Never shown you Rome, have I?

ASHLEY:
[small, sad smile] There was never time.

HELEN:
I have a lot to make up for. [pause] Shall we?

[Helen holds her hand out to Ashley. Ashley looks down at it for a moment, takes a deep breath and looks back out over the city. Helen keeps her hand out, watching Ashley silently and still fighting tears. Ashley takes another deep breath and swallows hard.]

ASHLEY:
Yeah.

[Ashley takes her mother’s hand and they both stare out over the city.]
