EXT SANCTUARY FRONT LAWN

[Will, Helen and Ashley are lounging inside a Moroccan tent.]

WILL :
Okay, favorite album?

ASHLEY :
Never mind.

WILL :
What? Is that personal?

ASHLEY :
No, Never Mind, Nirvana!

WILL :
Oh!

ASHLEY :
You?

WILL :
Joshua Tree obviously.

HELEN :
Sgt. Pepper and Rhapsody in Blue.

WILL :
That's two.

HELEN :
Over the course of two lifetimes; Gershwin played it for me while he was writing it.

WILL :
And no doubt you've watch the sun come up with the Beatles.

HELEN :
Just one of them. Is there anything better than eating pastilla with your fingers?

ASHLEY :
Doing it in Morocco.

HELEN :
Which, by my calculations, is still 6,000 miles from our front lawn sadly.

ASHLEY :
I'll get the tea.

WILL :
So, what inspired this, this midnight at the oasis thing?

HELEN :
It's a ritual I've grown to love. It reminds me that the Bedouins had it right. They have this philosophy called "Al-Mizaan". It means never forfeiting your principles.

[Will’s cell phone buzzes and he sits up looking puzzled at the display. Ashley has returned with the tea.]

ASHLEY :
What is it?

WILL :
Uh, it's a...it's a text message from the wife of my best friend in college. “Danny's missing. Can I help? The police are useless”.

HELEN :
This friend, was he prone to trouble?

WILL :
Who Danny? No, nobody was more straight-up, more gentle.

[Will remembers a happy Danny.]

INT WAREHOUSE

[A transformed Danny is standing with his back turned to a man in the center of a crowd. The man is addressing the crowd.]

MAN 1 :
Place your bets. Not for the squeamish, not for the faint of heart! If you have a pulse, you will convulse! Ladies and Dobermans, for your blood-lusting pleasure tonight's first fight...give it up for Beta!

[The crowd cheers as an abnormal steps forward into the center.]

MAN 1 :
Come on, the Great Beta everyone!

MAN 1 :
And...Stretch. Stretch.

[Another man is pushed into the center.]

MAN 1 :
No more bets! No more bets!

MAN 1 :
Alright! Come on! Come on fight!

[Beta and Stretch start to fight. As they fight it becomes apparent that both are abnormals.]

MAN 1 :
Yes! Lovely, lovely.

MAN 1 :
Give it to him!

[Stretch seems to have the upper hand in the fight.]

MAN 1 :
Yeah! Come on! Ooh, Stretchy!, Stretchy yes! Yes! Lovely!

MAN 1 :
Alright!

[Beta gets up and comes back with a vengeance. Danny remains off to the side watching.]

MAN 1 :
Beautiful! Finish him! Finish him!

[Stretch is down and appears to be unconscious. Men with weapons have been off to the side. One receives a nod from MAN 1 and steps forward and fires the weapon at Stretch.

MAN 2 :
Get him out of here! Get him out!

[Stretch is dragged out.]

EXT STREET

[A kitchen has been set up serving food. Will walks up to Kayla’s Kitchen.]

WILL :
Kayla...

KAYLA :
Oh, thanks for coming, Will.

[Kayla hugs Will in greeting.]

WILL :
What's this all about?

KAYLA :
Danny'd never be gone this long without calling me. He's in trouble, I know it.

WILL :
He didn't say anything about taking off?

KAYLA :
No, nothing. But you know he's been working with feeding the homeless, right?

WILL :
Yeah, yeah, you've got that whole thing going on with local restaurants, sure.

KAYLA :
Yeah, well, I've been filling in for him, and the thing is, some of the people he provided meals to went missing. When Danny looked into it, he found that at least a dozen homeless men had disappeared over the last few months.

WILL :
I haven't heard word one about it.

KAYLA :
Yeah, it barely made the newspapers. Invisible victims, that's what Danny always calls them. Anyway, when he went to the police, they basically shined him on; so, he started investigating on his own.

[Kayla reaches into her van and retrieves a file and hands it to Will.]

KAYLA :
This is a file of stuff he had gathered. He always said if he ever got in over his head, you'd be the person to get him out.

WILL :
And the police haven't given you anything?

KAYLA :
That's just it; I get these looks as if they know something but they won't tell me anything.

WILL :
Hey, listen, Danny's always been a survivor; whatever's happened to him you know he's going to get himself out of it, it's going to be okay.

KAYLA :
Alright.

[Will gives Kayla a comforting hug.]

INT SANCTUARY HELEN’S OFFICE

WILL :
Henry helped me collate all the data Danny collected; witness accounts, times, dates. One particular vehicle was spotted in three different locations where these guys disappeared.

HENRY :
It was a white van.

ASHLEY :
Well, that narrows it down.

HENRY :
Just wait, a homeless dude got a license number when he saw his friend allegedly being abducted.

WILL :
We traced it to a stolen vehicle that was found abandoned near the estuary.

HELEN :
Is there anything out there?

HENRY :
Nothing inhabited; just a former awning factory.

ASHLEY :
Can you say "Road Trip"?

INT CORPORATE BUILDING CONFERENCE ROOM

[Several people are seated around a large table. MAN 1 from the fight walks in.]

DANA WHITCOMB :
Glad you could join us, Mr. Peralta.

MR PERALTA :
Well, I know you were anxious for the latest on the trials. Ms. Whitcomb, gentlemen...

DANA :
Please...

MR PERALTA :
We've, uh, field tested 54 unique meta-human fighters to date. Nineteen were beaten to death in the pit, nine others were eliminated.

DANA :
And the most successful?

MR PERALTA :
The, uh, bio-armored meta-humans, 5 of our 6 variations made it through to the semis. The one we called Beta was definitely leading the pack.

DANA :
Wait. Was?

MR PERALTA :
Well, still working on the right dosage but we're making more just like him.

[Mr. Peralta lays a file down next to Dana Whitcomb.]

DANA :
How compliant was this Beta?

MR PERALTA :
Exactly what the Cabal had been hoping for, Ma'am.

DANA :
Submissive with his handlers, murder on his opponents; perfect field soldier for the cleansing.

MR PERALTA :
Right. Six months to reach peak performance. Train them in platoons; you'll have your army sooner than you think.

DANA :
Well, that presumes you know what I think, and that, Mr. Peralta, is doubtful. Your spectacles are demeaning to our higher purpose, but they are an effective proving ground.

INT WAREHOUSE

[Will, Ashley and Helen enter the dark warehouse with flashlights.]

ASHLEY :
What do you think went on here, executions?

HELEN :
There's a great range in age for this blood. Some of it seems months old, and others seem very fresh.

[Will kneels down for a closes look at the blood spatter.]

ASHLEY :
Patterns tell you anything?

WILL :
Medium velocity impact spatter, multiple trajectories, all consistent with repeated blunt trauma.

[Will sees something on the floor and walks over and picks it up.]

WILL :
Enswell.

ASHLEY :
As in "All's well that ends well"?

WILL :
It's a tool cut-men use to stop a fighter's eye from closing.

HELEN :
Epinephrine, if used topically, it can stop bleeding.

[Helen walks over to Will and Ashley with a vial in her hand.]

ASHLEY :
You think this was a training facility?

WILL :
Or a fight ring.

HELEN :
Not exactly Caesar’s.

WILL :
For bare-knuckle throw-downs it would work.

[The team hears something and turns toward it with flashlight and guns. It’s a man. Helen walks toward the man.]

HELEN :
My God!

MAN 2 :
Who are you?

HELEN :
I'm Helen, I'm your daughter. Don't you recognize me?

MAN 2 :
Come on, I know this long-lost child scam backward and forward. You gotta work on your delivery, babe.

[The man walks forward holding a flask in one hand.]

HELEN :
Your name is Gregory Magnus, and you are my father.

MAN 2 :
My name, if you don't mind, is Charles L. Denton.

HELEN :
If that's what you'd prefer. What are you doing here?

CHARLES :
Uh, yeah, give me a minute, okay? I, uh…I'm just sleeping one off. You know... free drinks? My buddy got me in here.

HELEN :
To what, an illegal fight?

CHARLES :
Alright, listen... if you're cops I want to see a badge.

HELEN :
That's a very nasty cut, may I?

[Helen points to his forehead.]

CHARLES :
Yeah, I'll take care of it.

HELEN :
I'd like you to come back with us. I'll clean that wound, and...and we can talk.

CHARLES :
Huh, we've got nothing to talk about.

WILL :
This might be a case of mistaken identity.

HELEN :
I'm not mistaken. I know my own father.

CHARLES :
Huh, piece of work, this one.

HELEN :
A quality I inherited.

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL LAB

[Helen is working on some lab work.]

HELEN :
We'll know before long if it was Danny's blood on the floor of that warehouse.

WILL :
This Charlie's real identity aside, he may be our best hope at finding out what happened to him.

HELEN :
I can't begin to explain it, but there is no mistaking who he is.

WILL :
Can I be perfectly blunt?

HELEN :
By all means.

WILL :
Half the dreams I had growing up were about my mother. I missed her so much that my subconscious took every opportunity to bring her back.

HELEN :
Charlie, or whatever he chooses to call himself, is not a dream and he is not a figment of my imagination.

WILL :
I know how compelling seeing this man must be.

HELEN :
I lost him once, Will; I'm not going to lose him again.

INT SANCTUARY GUEST ROOM

HELEN :
There are things I need to know about you...Charlie and if I wind up being wrong, you'll be sent home with my apologies. I... I presume you have a home.

CHARLIE :
I really do look like your father, okay, I get that.

HELEN :
I'll need to take a blood sample.

CHARLIE :
Oh….

HELEN :
There are objective measures; we could avoid a lot of bickering.

CHARLIE :
Look, if I am your father...do I, uh, own a piece of this?

[Charlie motions indicate his is meaning The Sanctuary.]

HELEN :
Where were you born?

CHARLIE :
In the middle of a squall in the Yukon Territory; my father was a...Bush pilot.

HELEN :
Your occupation?

CHARLIE :
On a good day, I'm a scoundrel.

HELEN :
Special skills?

CHARLIE :
I play blues harmonica; not well, but frequently.

HELEN :
Your date of birth?

CHARLIE :
I'll be 61 in March. Tell you what, bring a decent Scotch, I'll invite you to the party.

HELEN :
You were born in Devonshire in 1829. Your wife was Patricia Heathering, and you...you were the leading scientific light of your day.

FLASHBACK ENGLAND 1800s

[A teenage Helen is listening outside a door.]

MAN 3 :
You must understand, Gregory, the board has been patient with you, but their generosity has limits.

GREGORY :
As does their imagination! Can you not fathom the secrets we are on the verge of unlocking?

MAN 4 :
By accepting your hysterical and outlandish case studies as fact?

[The men have left and Gregory is talking to his daughter.]

A YOUNG HELEN :
I don't understand why are they always so angry at you?

GREGORY :
They're not angry, sweetheart, they're afraid.

YOUNG HELEN :
What have you done to make them so afraid of you? Tell me.

GREGORY :
I can't.

RETURN TO PRESENT

CHARLIE :
Okay, it's the drinking; I won't deny it. But I've never been called anything close to 180.

HELEN :
What do you know about what went on in those warehouses?

CHARLIE :
I told you, it's a little innocent gambling, a couple of bad boys wailing on each other.

HELEN :
One of those “bad boys”, was he a young Asian man?

CHARLIE :
You know, it's...it's all kind of a blur, to be honest.

HELEN :
His life is in jeopardy; if you know anything, anything at all...

CHARLIE :
I get these blackouts...but no, that doesn't include forgetting who I am.

HELEN :
Why are you hiding everything you know to be true?

CHARLIE :
Do I, uh...give my drink orders to you, or do you have someone for that?

[Charlie holds up his empty glass and shakes it.]

INT SANCTUARY HELEN’S OFFICE

[Will and Ashley enter. Helen is working at the computer.]

WILL :
Did you get anything on Danny?

HELEN :
Not directly, but I borrowed Charlie's cell phone. Check these photos at the fight. Now, nothing of Danny, but...look at this.

[Beta is shown on the monitor.]

WILL :
Oh my God, tell me that's not an abnormal.

HELEN :
Not just any abnormal.

WILL :
What do you mean?

HELEN :
Two years before my father disappeared on an expedition to Mecca, he created a number of new species. It was, in effect, the birth of genetic engineering. He kept it all in this journal, here.

[Helen opens a book and show Will and Ashley.]

HELEN :
Now...this particular species proved to be so aggressive and dangerous that he had no choice but to destroy every trace of it.

A FLASHBACK SHOWING GREGORY WORKING ON BETA.

ASHLEY :
But if he destroyed it…

HELEN :
How did it survive into this century, I know.

WILL :
We don't even know how your father survived into this century.

ASHLEY :
Or even if he is your father.

HELEN :
It simply begs any semblance of credulity that a man identical to Gregory would be a spectator at a fight in which the very species of abnormal he created would be a combatant.

ASHLEY :
Okay, yeah, it is very, very weird.

WILL :
What does it say about these matches that an abnormal is being used?

HELEN :
I worry that your friend, Danny, may have stumbled onto something far more sinister than extreme fighting.

INT SANCTUARY CHARLIE’S GUEST ROOM

[Helen and Charlie are standing in room talking.]

HELEN :
How good's your memory, Charlie?

CHARLIE :
I remember better days than this.

HELEN :
Gregory Magnus may not know a single thing about what happened to Will's friend, Danny, but Charlie Denton does. What do you know about these fights? And don't tell me it's all a little blurry.

[Exasperated Charlie moves to a chair and sits.]

CHARLIE :
You know, you've got issues. Anybody ever tell you that?

HELEN :
We know that people gamble on these fights and that abnormals are pitted against one another. Do the fighters die sometimes?

CHARLIE :
We all die sometime.

HELEN :
So you don't have a problem betting on these blood matches?

CHARLIE :
Kill an abnormal, save a pit bull.

HELEN :
Perhaps you're not my father after all; he would never have been so callous.

CHARLIE :
Well now we're making progress.

[Helen sits in a chair across from Charlie.]

HELEN :
The father I knew risked everything for the simple belief that all creatures deserved a fair chance.

CHARLIE :
If I had a daughter, I'd want her to be just like you. A little less borderline schizo, but otherwise...

HELEN :
See, that's a trait that you and Gregory share, stubbornness.

CHARLIE :
Probably drove him to the edge, too.

HELEN :
If you know anything about what happened to these men please, tell me Charlie.

CHARLIE :
I don't know. I swear I don't.

[Charlie reaches up and rubs the back of his neck.]

CHARLIE :
But I know someone who would.

INT AUTO SHOP

[A mechanic is standing over an opened hood of a car. Will and Ashley are beside the car.]

MECHANIC :
Now the beauty of this one is that they built it so the engine sounds harmonized at freeway speed. Yeah, they don't make them like that anymore.

ASHLEY :
But they are making something new. You're the man with the 411 on the abnormals fight club. Charlie told us.

MECHANIC :
I know cars.

WILL :
Yeah, you also know the players. And you don't want to tick off our boss.

ASHLEY :
Trust us on that.

MECHANIC :
It's been going on a year, a year and a half. The money's huge; it moves through all the big books.

WILL :
What's the betting on Danny Bradley?

MECHANIC :
Oh, they don't go by names like that; "Destroyer", "Slice 'n dice", "The Re-Arranger."

ASHLEY :
Where can we find the next fight?

MECHANIC :
I could make a couple of calls; I'll tell you what I hear but I warn you, the buy-in is steep and it's all super-secret. Word doesn't get out 'til mid-week.

[The mechanic closes the welding mask and begins to weld the crack in the engine using his finger.]

INT SANCTUARY LIBRARY ROOM

[Will, Ashley and Henry are standing behind Helen who is seated in front of her computer.]

HELEN :
Tests from the floor of the warehouse; everyone who bled in that ring was an abnormal.

WILL :
So Danny wasn't there.

HELEN :
Not the Danny you remember in all likelihood.

HENRY :
What does that mean?

HELEN :
His blood's been altered. They've changed him or he's changed himself; Danny's an abnormal now.

ASHLEY :
What about the blood comparison between you and Charlie?

HELEN :
That's my DNA on the left and his on the right.

WILL :
Father and daughter.

HELEN :
The only way that's not the man who made me who I am is if they used his DNA to create a new Gregory Magnus.

INT SANCTUARY CHARLIE’S ROOM

CHARLIE (ON PHONE) :
Yeah, it's Charlie.

DANA :
How are things at the Sanctuary?

CHARLIE :
Magnus is coming along just fine. The asset is in place.

DANA :
I'm happy to hear that.

INT SANCTUARY MULTI-LEVEL LAB

HELEN :
Recognize this?

CHARLIE :
What, "From Russia with love"?

HELEN :
It's the lab I built based on your designs.

CHARLIE :
Wow, I...designed this over a hundred years ago!

HELEN :
Well, not the modern equipment of course but the core concept, yes. Do you remember the first time you took me into your laboratory?

CHARLIE :
Hey, look, I'm sorry but um...I'm not getting the antacid flashback you were hoping for.

FLASHBACK ENGLAND 1800s

[Helen is a young adult standing leaning over her father’s desk across from him.]

HELEN :
You...are the most talented medical researcher I have ever known and yet you keep your most important work hidden from the world, from me. If you truly believe that I have potential, Father, please...help me achieve it.

[Gregory is standing in front of a locked door as Helen comes down the stairs.]

GREGORY :
Once you enter this door, you are on a path that cannot be reversed.

[Helen goes through the door and looks around in wonder.]

RETURN TO PRESENT

HELEN :
You told me my world would never be the same.

CHARLIE :
Hey, no offense, but...your old man sounds like a whack job.

HELEN :
I loved him with all my heart, and you're remembering a little I can see it.

[Helen walks to a table and opens a case. She pulls something out and opens it.]

HELEN :
These were your surgical tools; in your hands, they were magic.

CHARLIE :
Is that right?

INT SANCTUARY OFFICE

[Will is awakened by his cell phone ringing.]

WILL (ON CELL PHONE) :
Hello?

MECHANIC :
It's the mechanic.

WILL :
Did you get the information?

MECHANIC :
Not on the phone. Meet me at Hollister and 80th in 20 minutes; $500 cash per invite. Come alone.

WILL :
Okay.

INT SANCTUARY MULTI-LEVEL LAB

[Helen removes a wooden box from the case on the table.]

HELEN :
This is the microscope you gave me when I was ten. You said it would give me access to an unseen world; a world you said was filled with untold wonders.

CHARLIE :
I need a refill.

HELEN :
It's a part of you, you can't deny it; it's connecting for you. You came back here for a reason Father; it can't have been by chance.

CHARLIE :
Stop it will ya! Back off! I'm not your...

[Charlie grabs the pain of his neck in obvious pain. He drops the glass he was holding.]

HELEN :
Father, what's wrong?

[Helen examines the back of Charlie’s neck and sees a Y incision and movement beneath his skin.]

INT WAREHOUSE MAKE-SHIFT MEDICAL ROOM

[Will is dragged in by two men.]

MR PERALTA :
You put up quite a struggle, or so my boys tell me. The mechanic says you're a big fan of the fights.

WILL :
Danny... Where's Danny?

MR PERALTA :
Got someone else I'd like to introduce to you first.

[Mr. Peralta holds up a container with an insect inside it.]

MR PERALTA :
Meet your new boss.

[Will is forced onto a table face first. His struggling does nothing as the men hold him down and a Y incision is made on the back of his neck. The insect is implanted inside. Will passes out.]

INT CORPORATE OFFICE CONFERENCE ROOM

DANA :
What about our rookie from the Sanctuary?

MR PERALTA :
He's been given every courtesy, for now.

DANA :
Ironic if he turns into something useful.

MR PERALTA :
Well, I can't see him going the distance.

DANA :
Just make sure he has the procedure first. Once the scarab controls him, we can juice him into abnormality. With a little luck, he might give us an insight...or two.

MR PERALTA :
Already been taken care of; anything else I can do for you?

DANA :
Smell better.

MR PERALTA :
Right.

INT SANCTUARY HENRY’S WORK AREA

HELEN :
There's an insect like creature deeply imbedded in the muscles in the base of his brain.

HENRY :
What the hell is it?

HELEN :
Can't say for certain without doing more tests; but all my instincts are telling me that this is what's controlling my father, keeping him from remembering who he really is.

HENRY :
You’re thinking the Cabal?

HELEN :
These fight clubs could be their living laboratories, homeless people their guinea pigs.

[Ashley rushes into the room.]

ASHLEY :
Mom, Will is missing and I do not have a good feeling about this.

HELEN :
Have you checked the lower levels?

ASHLEY :
Up and down, I think he might've gone to see the mechanic; there was an address jotted down in the office.

HENRY :
Well we've got to get out there.

ASHLEY :
Chances are that was just for the snatch and grab.

HELEN :
We find out where this fight was moved, we'll find Will and Danny.

ASHLEY :
You know, the one man who's holding out on us is the one man who might know something.

INT CELL

DANNY :
Thought you'd never wake up.

WILL :
What have they done to you?

DANNY :
Same as it ever was...only now I'm better; stronger, faster, smarter.

WILL :
Kayla's out of her mind worrying. She doesn't know if you're dead or alive.

DANNY :
What's it look like to you!

WILL :
You're scaring me.

DANNY :
There's a time and a place, Will. This is my time, my place.

WILL :
You don't even know what it is they gave you, do you?

DANNY :
They gave me a front row seat to the world.

WILL :
What was that thing, that insect?

DANNY :
It's nothing, man. The real deal is the juice!

WILL :
Danny, listen to your self; you don't even sound like you.

DANNY :
I've never felt so alive. It's like I'm flying without wings.

WILL :
Come on! If you heard a kid in your program talk like that, you'd kick his ass.

DANNY :
This is freedom, brother. You've been living in a box. You'll see what I mean; you'll be a warrior, like me.

[Will remembers being injected.]

WILL :
They've done it to me.

INT SANCTUARY LIBRARY ROOM

[Helen and Ashley enter the room. Charlie is seated in a chair enjoying another drink.]

HELEN :
Your friends at the fight ring have taken our colleague.

CHARLIE :
Don't know what you're talking about.

HELEN :
This is getting old, Charlie. It's obvious you know more than you're telling us.

CHARLIE :
Obvious to you, maybe; even if I could lead you to those people, I'd be paying in body parts. Still one or two I'm kinda fond of.

ASHLEY :
You know, I don't know you from Adam, but my Mom says you're her Dad and that makes you my...my grandpa. And that gives me the right to tell you that you're one cranky, ungrateful sack.

CHARLIE :
Hey, you be careful young lady!

ASHLEY :
My mother worshipped you! She makes it sound like you were the smartest man in the world.

CHARLIE :
Not smart enough, apparently.

ASHLEY :
Charlie! We're family okay whether you believe it or not, and what you're doing to my mom, and to Will, and to all those people, is wrong!

CHARLIE :
Well, we know where she got the lip.

ASHLEY :
Enough!

[Ashley knocks the drink out of Charlie’s hand and gets in his face.]

ASHLEY :
Okay, if you have any decency left in you, you will tell us where that fight’s going down.

CHARLIE :
Look, I can't tell you what I don't know.

HELEN :
Well, then, you leave me no choice. If only Gregory will tell us what Charlie knows, we'll have to find a way to release him. I'm quite deft with a scalpel; I learned at the side of a master.

CHARLIE :
Ooh….

INT CELL

DANNY :
I heard them say they were taking you straight to a ten.

WILL :
A ten?

DANNY :
That's the bomb, man. That's what I want. That's what I've been waiting for.

WILL :
We've gotta get out of here.

[Will cringes in pain and leans against a wall.]

DANNY :
Don't fight it. It's useless. Do you know why you're alive, Will? By the time you leave this place...if you leave this place...you'll know.

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL ROOM

[Charlie is prepped for surgery.]

HELEN :
It's a local anesthetic only, so you should be awake for the entire procedure.

[Helen begins the surgery pulling back the flaps of skin to expose the insect.]

HELEN :
It's deeply embedded.

[As Helen touches the insect with the forceps the insect moves and Charlie moans in pain.]

INT CELL

[Will is becoming an abnormal. He rips his shirt as it has become uncomfortable with is increasing muscle mass.]

WILL :
What...what is it?

DANNY :
It's the juice; I didn't think it could happen this fast.

WILL :
What...what do I look like?

DANNY :
Like a god, Will, like a god.

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL ROOM

HELEN :
There's a rhythm to the creature's movements. If I can get it on the proper pulse point, I should be able to get the legs out individually and tie them off.

ASHLEY :
And if you can't?

HELEN :
The hinged spurs on the pincers will propel the remnant all the way to the spinal canal, where it will paralyze and then kill. Can you hear me, Charlie?

CHARLIE :
Yeah. You said you're going to kill me.

HELEN :
Hopefully not.

[Helen close the forceps around a leg. Charlie responds in pain.]

INT WAREHOUSE

MR PERALTA :
Gentlemen! Gentlemen! Ladies and gentlemen! I give you ugly fighters! Ugly fighting! Ugliness for the beautiful! Tonight's main card, a Meat Club first -- A battle royale! With "Double Doom"!

[An abnormal is pushed to the center of the gathered crowd. He enters reluctantly and is shot with a taser.]

MR PERALTA :
And...Lobster!

[Another abnormal enters.]

MR PERALTA :
Lobster versus Riot! Riot!

[Danny is pushed forward.]

MR PERALTA :
And in his Meat Club debut, The Boy Man!

[Will shoves two men from the crowd and enters the center.]

DANNY :
Do you feel it, Will? Huh? This is what it's all about!

MR PERALTA :
You know the rules! There are no rules! Last man standing walks away! And start fighting! Right! Come on, fight!

CROWD :
Fight! Fight!

MR PERALTA :
Fight! Fight!

[The Abnormal remain standing. Mr. Peralta motions to someone.]

MR PERALTA :
Camden!

CAMDEN :
Come on you freaks, let's fight!

[Camden fires a gun in the air. The abnormals begin fighting.]

MR PERALTA :
Yeah! That's it!

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL ROOM

HELEN :
His vitals are spiking; trouble.

ASHLEY :
What?

HELEN :
Front pair; Doomsday wired; completely enmeshed in his peripheral nerve.

ASHLEY :
And if it gets cut?

HELEN :
So does his lifeline.

[Charlie remembers being implanted with the insect.]

HELEN [IN FLASHBACK] :
You were born in Devonshire in 1829... in 1829...in 1829...

[Charlie remembers waking with what appears to be ice covering him. Dana Whitcomb is standing beside a doctor.]

DOCTOR :
110 over 70; the bloods moving.

[Charlie remembers Beta.]

HELEN :
Hang on, Father.

GREGORY-CHARLIE :
I'm trying, Helen.

ASHLEY :
Mom, he's in a lot of pain; can't you knock him out or something?

HELEN :
I need him conscious.

[Gregory remembers...]

GREGORY :
Once you enter this door, you are on a path that cannot be reversed...cannot be reversed...cannot be reversed...

DANA :
Well, Gregory, you've designed the perfect fight machine.

[Gregory is standing over Beta who is on a table.]

GREGORY :
You don't know the hell you've unleashed.

HELEN :
Can you hear me?

GREGORY :
Get it out of me!

HELEN :
I need your help.

GREGORY :
I'm the patient, for God's sake!

HELEN :
You are also the most able surgeon the Royal College ever produced. These last pincers are the neural tap; how do I separate them without killing you?

GREGORY :
The...Norwich Giant.

ASHLEY :
The what? Mom, what did he say?

HELEN :
Pituitary abnormal on a hair trigger to self destruct; isolate the creature's neural kill switch, cut it before it can send a signal.

ASHLEY :
Sounds like a plan.

HELEN :
…Except the Norwich Giant died on the table.

INT WAREHOUSE

[Will has defeated his opponent but Danny is in trouble. Will goes after Danny’s opponent.]

MR PERALTA :
Yes! Yes!

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL ROOM

HELEN :
I've exposed the peripheral nerve where it's been hijacked near the cut point.

[Helen looks to Ashley for reassurance; Ashley nods.]

ASHLEY :
Do it, Mom.

[Gregory reaches out for Ashley’s hand.]

INT WAREHOUSE

[Danny is standing over the downed opponent continuing to throw punches. Will is strutting around the center.]

CAMDEN :
Game's over. Back down.

[Camden threats Danny with the taser.]

MR PERALTA :
Let's get on with it! Come on. Get him out.

[Men drag off the unconscious abnormal.]

MR PERALTA :
Fight! Fight! Come on, fight!

[Walking back to the center Danny looks at Will but then goes after Double Doom. Double Doom grabs Danny’s leg and easily throws him away. Will rushes in and lands a punch which knocks Double Doom down unconscious. Double Doom is tasered and removed.]

MR PERALTA :
Alright, alright, you two! Let's go!

[Will and Danny stand facing each other. Danny seems hesitant but Will motions him toward him.]

MR PERALTA :
Here we go. Here we go!

[Danny throws punches at Will which don’t seem to faze him. Will punches Danny and then grabs him by the shoulders.]

WILL :
Look at me!

[Will head butts Danny and they continue fighting.]

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL ROOM

HELEN :
Got it.

[Helen removes the insect and places it in glass container.]

GREGORY :
Genius Meat Packing...

ASHLEY :
I'll get an address.

INT GENIUS MEAT PACKING WAREHOUSE

[Will is defeating Danny. Danny has fallen and Will is encouraged on by the crowd.]

MR PERALTA :
I think we have a winner. Love it. Come on.

[Will kneels down and starts punch Danny. Danny is losing, Will stands back up and backs away.]

WILL :
This is your time, right? Huh, is that what you said? Is this what you want? Is this what you want?

[Will motions with his arms to the crowd.]

WILL :
Is this what you all want?

[Will turns his attention back to Danny who is still lying on the floor.]

WILL
Get up! Get up!

[Danny leans on his elbow and just looks at Will.]

MR PERALTA :
Finish him, you dumb bastard! Come on!

[Will goes after Danny as Henry pushes aside men in the crowd and runs to grab Will.]

HENRY :
Will, no!

[Will throws Henry to the ground and then goes after him.]

HENRY :
Whoa, whoa, whoa, it's me, Henry.

[Will stops and looks at Henry. The crowd continues to cheer Will on.]

HENRY :
Will!

[Will grabs Henry by the sides of his neck.]

HENRY :
Will...no, no, no! This isn't you! This isn't you...

[Henry places his hands on Will shoulders and looking him directly in the eyes pleads with him.]

MR PERALTA :
Come on! Come—

[Mr. Peralta sees Helen enter.]

HENRY :
Will, this is not you.

WILL :
Henry? Henry...help... help me.

[Helen sees Mr. Peralta moving away and follows him.]

CROWD :
Come on! Kill him! Let's go!

[Ashley enters the center with both guns drawn at Mr. Peralta’s men.]

ASHLEY :
Stand down!

WILL :
Henry, help me.

HENRY :
You're going to be okay, Will.

WILL :
Help me.

HENRY :
You're going to be okay. Listen to me. First thing we gotta do is get that thing out of you. Okay?

WILL :
Yeah. Yeah...

[Mr. Peralta is removing money from a safe as Helen walks in behind him. Mr. Peralta turns to her but then continues putting the money in a bag.]

MR PERALTA :
You think you're breaking up some fights? You have no idea who you're messing with.

HELEN :
Pass the same message on to the Cabal.

[Mr. Peralta stops packing the money and suddenly grabs a gun and turn to Helen. Helen kicks the gun out of his hand and back hands him across the face knocking him down. She then puts her foot on his throat holding him down and points her gun down at him.]

MR PERALTA :
What do you want?

HELEN :
I want these fights stopped, and the genetic experiments. You surface someplace else, and we'll be waiting.

MR PERALTA :
Alright, alright!

INT SANCTUARY MEDICAL ROOM

[Helen is injecting Will.]

HELEN :
This is the last cycle. All signs are that your body has purged the abnormality; Danny's not far behind.

WILL :
I keep thinking, was that me ready to kill a friend, or was it...somebody else?

HELEN :
We all have the impulse for violence; the true measure of a species, indeed, of a person, is in our restraint.

EXT STREET

[Will and Danny get out of Will’s car. Kayla turns to see Danny.]

KAYLA :
Oh my God! Danny!

[Kayla runs to Danny.]

DANNY :
Kayla.

[Danny runs over to Kayla. They hug and two kids join in. Will remains leaning on his car door smiling at the scene before him.]

KAYLA :
Oh my God!

DANNY :
I love you.

[Kayla looks to Will.]

KAYLA :
Thank you.

[Will waves and gets back in his car.]

INT SANCTUARY HELEN’S OFFICE

[Helen and Gregory are sitting on a couch.]

HELEN :
The first ten years after you were gone were the hardest. I kept asking myself, "What would father do?"

GREGORY :
I can't stay here, Helen.

HELEN :
Why not? I have decades I haven't touched on; so much I need to show you.

GREGORY :
The longer I'm here, the greater risk I pose to your well-being. I wanted one day to come back to help protect you from your enemies, not to wind up helping them.

HELEN :
The Cabal had already asserted themselves as a threat long before they tapped your expertise. I admit, their engineered warrior, the one you designed, it…it does make me worry.

GREGORY :
When I finally put it down, it had taken the life of every abnormal in my laboratory.

HELEN :
Then who better to find it's weakness than you and what better place than here, in the Sanctuary?

GREGORY :
I'm sorry; I have to seek my own way for now.

[Helen is holding back tears as Gregory places his hand on her face.]

GREGORY :
But I promise you, Helen, I'll never be far.

[Gregory wipes the tears from Helen’s face.]
