"Warriors" is the eighth episode of the first season of Sanctuary, and the eighth episode overall in the series.

Synopsis[]

Investigating the disappearance of an old college friend, Will Zimmerman finds himself caught in an underground fight club where the combatants are genetically engineered abnormals who fight to the death like modern day gladiators. Meanwhile, Helen Magnus has to deal with the unexpected return of a long-lost family member.

Plot[]

Cold Open[]

Helen Magnus, Will Zimmerman, and Ashley Magnus lounge in a Moroccan themed, Bedouin-style tent, eating pastille and discussing such mundane matters as their favorite music, when the reverie is rudely interrupted by the buzz of Will's cell phone. It is a text message telling him that Danny Bradley, his best friend in college, is missing. Danny's wife, Kayla Bradley, is asking for Will's help.

The scene fades into a low-rent, illegal fighting arena where we see a scarred, grizzled version of Danny. A strange abnormal-looking 'creature' named Beta is about to fight a smaller man called Stretch, who is forced into the makeshift ring at gunpoint. Beta roars as Mr. Peralta, the ringmaster, screams "No more bets" to a noisy throng of bloodthirsty high-rollers. The smaller man appears to be an abnormal as well. Stretch, using a short-range elastic power, seems to be winning when the sheer brute strength of Beta overwhelms him. The ringmaster orders "finish him" and a roving guard discharges an electrical weapon into Stretch, whose lifeless form is dragged away.

Act I[]

Will visits Kayla at a free mobile kitchen, Danny and her run for the homeless. She explains how homeless men have been disappearing for months. Unable to get the police to help, Danny had begun his own investigation. Kayla gives Will her husband's file.

After Henry Foss helps him collate the data, the Sanctuary team heads out to investigate an old factory further that may give them some leads on why and where abducted people are being taken ("Can you say 'Road Trip'"?, grins Ashley).

At the same time, in a sparse high-rise office above the city, a strange board meeting is taking place. Mr. Peralta enters and is greeted by an irritated-looking woman who he calls Ms. Whitcomb. Eight grim-looking men sit at the table with her. Peralta reports that 54 "unique metahuman fighters" have been field tested thus far, with the "bio-armored metahumans" showing the most promise. Beta, who was "submissive with his handlers, murder on his opponents" is now dead. We're "still working on the right dosage", reports a subservient Peralta. Nonetheless, he is certain that the Cabal will be pleased. "The perfect field soldier for the cleansing", smiles Whitcomb. "Train 'em in platoons", boasts Peralta. "You'll have your army sooner than you think." Whitcomb barely tolerates the fawning Peralta.

The Sanctuary team discovers the warehouse where the fights have been taking place. There is blood all over the floor. As they discuss what it all means, a battered, disheveled drunk stumbles in. Ashley and her mother quickly point flashlights and pistols at him. "Who are you?", he asks. Magnus stuns everyone when she replies "I'm Helen. I'm your daughter".

Act II[]

The old man denies that he's Gregory Magnus, insisting that his name is Charles L. Denton. He says he's been "sleeping one off" and doesn't want to go when Magnus offers to take him to the Old City Sanctuary in order to care of the cut on his forehead.

Later, Will tries to convince her that she only wants this man to be her long-lost father, that it's just not possible. But Magnus is adamant: "I lost him once, Will. I'm not going to lose him again".

'Charlie' claims he's a 61-year-old 'scoundrel' who was born in the wilds of the Yukon Territory to a "Bush Pilot" father. Magnus insists that he was born in Devonshire, England in 1829 and that he was "the leading scientific light" of his day. She remembers begging him to explain why his peers were "always so angry" with him. 'Charlie' thinks her story is ridiculous, asserting that he doesn't recall what went on at the fights ("I get these blackouts..."). When pressed, he smiles and asks for more liquor.

Magnus downloads some photos that 'Charlie' took with his cell phone and shows them to Will and Ashley. The photo of Beta, she explains, matches one of her father's 'genetic engineering' experiments pictured in a journal he kept before he "disappeared on an expedition to Mecca". "This particular species", she says, "proved to be so aggressive and dangerous that he had no choice but to destroy every trace of it". But, if he destroyed it, what is it doing here, now?

When pushed again by Magnus, Charlie denies knowing anything and denies caring about abnormals: "Kill an abnormal, save a pit bull", he sneers. But then, he tells her he knows someone who might know something.

The Mechanic Will and Ashley are sent to tells them that the fights have been going on for over a year: "The money's huge. It moves through all the big books". He promises to tell them when the next fight is going to be held. But, after Will and Ashley walk away, we see that he too is an abnormal.

Magnus reveals that blood and DNA tests show that all the fighters are abnormals, which is bad news for Danny. "His blood's been altered", Magnus tells Will. "They've changed him, or he's changed himself. Danny's an abnormal now". The tests also indicate that 'Charlie' is Magnus' father, either that or he's a clone. But at that moment 'Charlie' is on the phone conspiring with Whitcomb. "The asset is in place", he reports.

Act III[]

Magnus continues to work on Charlie, showing him around the Sanctuary, telling him that it was based on his own design. She recalls the first time her father took her into his laboratory. "Once you enter this door", he told her, "you are on a path that cannot be reversed." Magnus is certain that 'Charlie' is remembering. She hammers away, showing him her father's surgical tools.

Meanwhile, Will gets a call from 'the Mechanic' and is summoned to a meeting. He is told to come alone and bring $500 cash.

As Charlie is being ripped apart by memories and a burning sense of betrayal, he screams at Magnus to "Back off! I'm not your...". Suddenly he collapses in agony. Magnus sees a Y-shaped surgical scar and something moving beneath the skin of his upper back, at the base of his neck.

Meanwhile, Will, who foolishly went alone, is being dragged before Peralta. He is thrown down on a metal table and an incision is made in his upper back. A large (± 3") cockroach-like insect they call a 'scarab' crawls into the bloody wound and sinks in. "Meet your new boss", gloats Peralta. Will screams in agony and passes out.

Act IV[]

As Magnus and Henry study the bug in Charlie, Ashley rushes in to tell them that Will is missing, and she has a bad feeling about it. In order to find him, they must find out where the next fight is.

Will comes to in a dank, barren cell. An angry Danny towers above him. As his friend goes on about how wonderful everything is now on "the juice", Will suddenly realizes that he's been injected with something which is radically changing him.

Concurrently, Ashley and Magnus are confronting Charlie. When they once again get nowhere, Magnus tells him that she'll have to use a scalpel in order to release Gregory.

Danny informs Will that he's heard they are taking him straight to a '10' match. Will tries to leave, but the Scarab asserts itself and he is helpless.

As Magnus begins operating on her father, Will is transforming into an angry, tormented, hulk-like figure. Danny enthusiastically tells him that he now looks like a "god" and Will smiles.

Act V[]

As Magnus tries to slowly and carefully extract the Scarab without killing Charlie, Peralta is announcing a 'Meat Club' first: a double match of Riot (Danny) and the Boy Man (Will) against Double Doom and the Lobster, both of whom have to be forced into the ring. To the blood-lusting cries of the 'beautiful people', the four abnormals grunt and pound on each other unmercifully.

On the operating table, as parts of the bug get detached, Gregory begins to remember who he was, or is. Now, even though the surgery could kill him, he just wants the bug out.

In the "battle royale", Will is clearly the strongest of the combatants, but he seems to have lost any connection with who he is, or was. Then, after vanquishing their two hapless foes, Will and Danny are ordered to turn on each other and finish it off.

Back at the operating table Magnus finally successfully extracts the Scarab from her father. Just before passing out, Gregory reveals where the fight is being held.

At the meat packing plant, Will is in the process of beating Danny to death when Henry rushes in and tries to pull him away. "This is not you", he tells his friend, "this is not you". Ashley holds off the guards at gunpoint, stunned at what she sees, at what Will has become. Henry tells him that they have to get the bug out of him and continues to talk his friend down. Will, with some recognition, begs that they please help him. Magnus takes off after a fleeing Peralta.

She catches up to him as he empties his safe and drops him to the ground when he tries to shoot her. Magnus puts her booted foot on his throat and orders the frightened flunky to tell the Cabal that she wants the fights, and the genetic experiments, stopped - or they'll have to deal with her.

As he and Danny are slowly brought back to health, Will struggles with what he has done: "I keep thinking, was that me, ready to kill a friend; or was it...somebody else?". Magnus assures him that all signs indicate "your body has purged the abnormality". But is the hulk really gone forever, or does it yet lurk somewhere within him? Magnus reminds him that the true mark of humanity is one's restraint to inherent violence.

As for Danny, Kayla is overjoyed when Will returns her husband alive.

However, Magnus is left in tears when her father tells her that he can't stay. In his guilt, he imagines he would be a danger to her, as if the Cabal could be even more determined now. He rejects his daughter's tearful offer to stay and work at the Sanctuary, telling her he must find his own way for now: "But I promise you, Helen, I'll never be far".

Extras[]

Notes[]

  • Casting: Christopher Heyerdahl who plays Bigfoot / John Druitt is completely absent from this episode. No mention or explanation by the characters for Bigfoot's absence is ever given.
  • Factual Error: The episode opens with a bit of comradery between the Sanctuary team with Will Zimmerman asking Ashley Magnus and Helen Magnus what their favorite musical albums are. Magnus replies that one of hers is "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin. This is an error as "Rhapsody in Blue" is not an album, it's a musical composition piece (i.e. singular track; not a collection of tracks).
  • Geography: In the opening scene, Helen Magnus and Ashley Magnus discuss the distance between the Old City Sanctuary in Old City and that of Morocco (MA). Magnus's line is: "Which by my calculations is still 6,000 miles from our front lawn, sadly." Old City, while the series never expressly stated its specific location, is said to be just near / outside of Vancouver, British Columbia. The distance between central Vancouver and central Morocco is about 5,656 miles (the city of Marrakesh just to the west is about 5,700 miles apart). This means that Magnus rounded up by 300-350 miles, which is quite significant in terms of land separation. For perspective, the average width of a US state (311 miles) could easily fit in between with how many extra miles Magnus added on.
  • Wardrobe: In the first half of this episode, Ashley Magnus notably wears a thin black jacket with removable sleeves. While at the Old City Sanctuary near the beginning of the episode, she wears the jacket as a sleeveless vest. During the warehouse investigation, the sleeves are zipped on. Later back at the Sanctuary, when Helen Magnus took Charlie's cell phone Ashley is wearing it as a vest again. The sleeves return for a final time when Ashley leaves the Sanctuary again, this time to visit the Mechanic. Once back at the Sanctuary, the sleeves disappear when meeting up with her mother in the library to discuss blood test results. This is the last we see of it as her outfit changes with the rise of the next morning. Continuity wise, this is a pretty impressive feat to accurately keep track of a simple little 'nightmare' detail such as this considering the room temperature in the studio doesn't change unlike the environment the character is supposed to be visiting. There is also the possibility that the scenes may have potentially been shot non-sequentially as well (shooting order is unknown).
  • When talking to her father, Helen Magnus reveals the name of her mother, Patricia Heathering, to the audience.
  • Chronology: According to the Mechanic, the abnormal fighting has been going on for one to 1.5 years. Considering the chronology of this episode within the season, it's potentially late-2008 (~ October / November-ish possibly). Based on the abnormals being created from Gregory Magnus's personal work from 1907 [1], it means that the Cabal had found and converted him back in mid-late 2007, before the events of Episode 1x00 - "Sanctuary for All".
  • Continuity Error: When Will Zimmerman and Ashley Magnus visit the Mechanic, they are standing parallel side-by-side not touching. At the end of the meeting after Ashley asks where they could find the next fight and the Mechanic replies that he'll make a couple of calls, the next shot of Will and Ashley shows Ashley turned almost 90 degrees from facing the Mechanic to now facing Will, holding on to Will's left arm with both hands (releasing her left hand after a couple seconds); her posture and the way she looks at him is emotionally supportive, as if to either hold him back and or to help usher him away. It indicates that this scene was reshot and stitched together using at least two different versions of this scene (perhaps one where Will was struggling to control his anger and grabbed at the Mechanic's coveralls - hence why he's seen readjusting them). The tone of the Mechanic also changes. During the majority of the meeting the Mechanic seems more comedic, laughing, and willing to help. His tone changes however to become darker and less willing to cooperate during the line "I can make a couple of calls. I'll tell you what I hear". The body language of the Mechanic in the following scene with Ashley turned and Will saying something (that was muted by the voiceover) before leaving (early) doesn't match the pace of the voice over, indicating that something else was being said by the Mechanic in the scene causing Ashley to hold on to Will before he stormed off out of the garage.
  • Scientific Error: Helen Magnus has done a comparison profile of her DNA and that of Charlie, her putative father. The results are labeled 'DNA Breakout' which may be a garbling of 'DNA Breakdown'. The two profiles are shown to be identical, which would only be the case if Magnus and Charlie were genetically identical, such as in the case of being clones or identical twins. If they were father and daughter there would be a 50% match, since only half of her DNA would come from her father.
  • Will Zimmerman is captured and Mr. Peralta has a scarab put into Will's neck. The bug we see is actually the juvenile, aka nymph, stage of a cockroach...probably a 'death's head' Blaberus craniifer, or hybrid thereof.
  • Reshoot: The scene where Helen Magnus and Ashley Magnus approach Charlie in the library was evidently shot multiple times based on set photos as at least two / three photos show reactions and postures between the actors that are not present in the episode. Key differences between takes seem to regard Ashley's reaction towards Charlie. Notably, in one photo, Ashley is holding Charlie's flask. In the episode, Ashley hits the flask out of his hand and it's heard skidding across the library's floor. This photo indicates that in one unused take, she had a more subdued reaction where she simply grabbed/took it from his hand instead of batting it away.
  • Retcon: Helen Magnus's father Gregory Magnus being found and thawed by the Cabal after being lost on his trip to Mecca and frozen for the last century in this episode has been slightly retconned by the writers in Episode 3x11 - "Pax Romana". Ranna Seneschal states that Gregory has been a respected citizen in Praxis for the past 65-Praxian-years, revealing to the audience that Gregory's longevity is be due to scientific intervention, not by being cryogenically stored in ice as presented in this episode. Note: Gregory being frozen can still work had Gregory left Praxis and got caught in a severe snow storm on the surface; being found not long after.
  • The location in which the Cabal found Gregory Magnus is unknown. Viewers can only speculate that it may have been next to a Hollow Earth gateway.
  • Revealing Mistake: Will Zimmerman is captured and subjected to the same genetic manipulation as his friend Danny Bradley. The actor is obviously wearing foam-padding 'muscles' that flex unnaturally during the fight and give obviously under the pressure of Henry Foss's fingertips when the Sanctuary team arrive to rescue Will.
  • At the end of the episode, Gregory Magnus promises that he will "never be far" from Helen Magnus. With Gregory returning back to Praxis from Old City, it makes this comment an extreme understatement in every sense of context and meaning, as well as a blatant lie outside of it being a simple metaphor for keeping the memory and love of him in her head and heart. Where Gregory travels to after he leaves the Old City Sanctuary, Magnus can't easily physically visit him whenever she wants to, nor is she able to simply pick up a phone to call him to keep in touch. Praxis is thousands of miles away and deep underground in a pocket of magnetite lodestone in the Earth's crust on the nearer side to the mantle layer. Trying to even get to the city is very difficult to do (trespassing results in immediate execution), and communication with the city is also not only nearly impossible to do with surface technology, but also forbidden by the Praxian Senate Council.
